Skull base fractures

Skull base fractures are those happening in the bones associated with the cranial floor.

Due to the fact that the bones in this area are thick, high impact trauma is needed to fracture any of these bones, augmenting the possibility of more severe neurological damage.

Some signs related to skull base fractures are the “raccoon eyes” sign (periorbital hematoma), hematoma associated in the area behind the ears, bleeding or cerebrospinal fluid leak through the ear.

Diagnosis is established according to trauma history, signs identified and are confirmed following imaging studies.
