Epidural hematomas

Epidural hematoma is located between the skull and dura mater, due to bleeding from a blood vessel, following head trauma, it may be associated with a cranial fracture.

Among the main symptoms we can find, confusion, dizziness, altered consciousness, dilated pupil.

Since it is usually followed by a head blow, patient may present with a “lucid interval” followed by loss of consciousness.

An extradural or epidural hematoma demands urgent medical management in order to prevent permanent brain damage.

Urgent decompressive craniotomy with clot removal is the treatment of choice.

In some cases, according to patient evolution, some anti convulsive medication can be used, or medications to reduce cerebral swelling.
