Intraventricular tumors

There is a diversity of cerebral tumors, some of which are localized in the cerebral ventricles. Due to their localization, this type of tumors may go unnoticed.

Once symptoms initiate, they may present as headaches, secondary to hydrocephalus or intracranial hypertension.

Among ventricular tumors, we can find the following:

  • Meningiomas
  • Neurocytomas
  • Ependymomas
  • Sub ependymomas
  • Choroid plexus papilloma
  • Germinomas/Teratomas

Diagnosis is difficult, since some present similar morphology. Magnetic resonance imaging allows further analysis and allows to determine different characteristic patterns.

Findings on MRI, associated with patient characteristics, such as age, localization, may be enough to establish a more accurate diagnosis.

When treatment is decided, surgical resection is the treatment of choice, trying to accomplish complete removal. Depending on the patient characteristics and findings, in some instances, a ventriculoperitoneal shunt may be placed before definitive treatment.

Some of these lesions may spread through the cerebrospinal fluid, prompting a close follow up to make a prompt diagnosis in these cases.
