When to see a neurosurgeon?

Cuándo acudir con un neurocirujano - When to see a neurosurgeon

Neurological diseases are conditions that modify the functions of the normal central nervous system (made up of the brain, spinal cord), peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems and their supporting structures.

In this category of diseases are cervical, dorsal and lumbar disc hernias, sciatica, degenerative diseases of the spine, arteriovenous malformations, hemorrhages, craniofacial fractures and brain tumors.

Since they put brain and spinal cord functions at risk, the treatment of these diseases focuses on relieving pain, carrying out medical and surgical procedures, with the support of advanced technological instruments, for the recovery of the patient.

Neurological diseases are quite common and the mere suspicion that a person has a pathology related to a failure in the nervous system is enough reason to consult a neurosurgeon.

Timely seeking the help of specialists in neurology can be decisive, to avoid further damage, when symptoms such as:

  • Severe or ongoing headache.
  • Tremors or loss of sensation in the arms and legs.
  • Dizziness, vertigo, or unsteadiness.
  • Alterations in vision, such as double vision and loss of vision.
  • Loss of consciousness or fainting.
  • Difficulty walking and maintaining balance.
  • Difficulty speaking.
  • Memory loss, disorientation, or difficulty staying focused.
  • Confusion or seizures.

In the office, neurosurgeons rule out or confirm the existence of a neurological disease, through clinical knowledge of the patient, physical examination and tests such as imaging studies (ct scan  and magnetic resonance imaging), electrophysiology studies, among others.
