A cerebral infarction is the death of a part of the brain mass, caused by an obstruction of the blood vessels, which prevents the arrival of blood to an area of the brain.
This type of cerebrovascular event is called ischemia, and its cause is due to an abnormal phenomenon by which a clot forms in one of the cerebral arteries and obstructs it.
The interruption or reduction of the blood supply to a part of the brain prevents the brain tissue from receiving oxygen and nutrients, due to which, the brain cells begin to die, within minutes.
Without exceptions, a stroke is a medical emergency that demands immediate specialized care in order to reduce brain damage and disabilities. That is why it is so important to act quickly, when symptoms are perceived.
Among the signs and symptoms that indicate a possible cerebral infarction are:
- Confusion and difficulty for the person to articulate words and understand what is being said.
- Sudden paralysis or numbness in the face, arm, or leg, usually on only one side of the body. If one side of the mouth falls when the person tries to smile or if when raising the arms over the head, one of them begins to fall, it is likely that they are suffering a cardiovascular accident.
- Blurred or blackened vision in one or both eyes
- A sudden and severe headache, sometimes accompanied by dizziness, vomiting, or impaired consciousness.
- Sudden dizziness or loss of coordination causing the person to stumble or lose balance.
Risk factors for stroke
Stroke usually affects the elderly and is associated with risk factors such as transient ischemic attack, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, sedentary lifestyle and the consumption of alcohol, tobacco and drugs such as cocaine and methamphetamine, among others.
People can prevent a stroke by knowing their risk factors for stroke, following doctor’s prescriptions, and adopting a healthy lifestyle.
As said previously, as soon as symptoms appear there is a need act in an emergently, in order to try to unclog the arteries and avoid further brain damage.
Vascular surgeons use advanced diagnostic techniques and surgical treatments and, in agreement with the patient, or whoever represents him, we value the best options for his recovery.
Among surgical operations, open carotid endarterectomy, and the placement of transfemoral carotid stents or transcarotid stents, are offered.
